We had a fantastic time helping Luba, and her mom Lark plan this event! This party was a joint Graduation Party and Birthday Party for this lovely young lady, whom I actually had the privilege of coaching in club volleyball once upon a time ago! My how time flies! Now she’s all graduated! Luba is also planning to travel after graduation so we settled on a party focal point of Oh the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss.

A great big piece of Luba’s party was this dessert buffet. Though full of adorable candies and macaroon treats it needed to be tied together and made a little more Seuss- like. Below I’ll walk you through how we merged a vintage, rustic “traveler going places” inspiration with the bright and lively colors of the classic Dr. Seuss book. And Oh here we go…..
One of my favorite parts about this challenge were all the colors. The book itself has so many so we were totally free to liven the place up. However, I tried to rein in a lot of the “big” colors that the eye catches first. We stuck to a main 5: yellow, lavender, fuchsia, mint green and light blue. You can see these main colors “bigger” throughout like with the linens, the pom poms and then with the already eye catching macaroons (provided by Market of Choice Bakery along with all other baked goods)

The Vintage Event made a coordinating fabric banner in themed colors to tie in the buffet with another area at the party, making the “room” connect. It coordinates with the one on the welcome table which can be seen at the Main PARTY POST. Again, the banner blocks the main colors and softens the table. It also allows a little more fun and invited random candy colors to join the table.

This color blocking strategy gave me more freedom to choose the candies we wanted because they would be smaller and not as demanding on the eye. Yes, it is important what your display LOOKS like so that people want to approach it and interact with it. Here is where we connected all colors:

The most fun and FINAL touch to complete the table was giving everything a Dr. Seuss-like name. I stormed my sons’ bookshelves for every Seuss book I could find and started digging out words. Not as easy as you’d think! I also had to make the names sort of resemble the candy. I think that the Reeses Peanut Butter Cups being called Lorax Hats is my greatest victory! Do you have a favorite? Comment below! Or if you want to know where a word comes from, ask in the comments and I’ll tell you the book I dug it out of!
